Skulduggery Pleasant
It is upsetting that people read less books nowadays because of the advancement of technology. Although technology is essential, it is important to strike a balance between books and technology. Books are an incomparable source of entertainment, as well as knowledge. I am definitely fond of books. Recently I read a series of books called ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’, one I simply could not put down! It surely is the best series I had ever read. It took me on a roller coaster I was definitely not prepared for.
The Interesting Storyline
Firstly, the thing I liked the most about this book was that its storyline was unpredictable, which subconsciously made me want to read more. It always had a twist round the corner ! Some moments were really gory, which sent a chill down my spine. The author sometimes threw in a little bit of humour here and there. For example, when Skulduggery was fired from Sanctuary because of a misunderstanding, he said “I think that the people have really started to like me”. This shows how the writer includes humour in between an intense situation. These little bits keep the reader interested in the book. Also, the inclusion of vivid imagery in the book almost makes it feel like there is a movie being played.
Theme
Furthermore, the book is based around the theme of courage, which is an essential aspect of life. The author infers that courage is an abstract tool that is not only useful, but also essential during unfavourable and overwhelming circumstances. He traces the journey of a young teenager who has to face many challenges, but never gives up. This teaches the kids from the same age group how to stay strong and bold when the situation gets out of control. The author indicates how one has to sometimes confront pain and intimidation in life. Reading this book opened my eyes and made me realize the importance of staying strong when faced with adverse circumstances.
Writing Style
Another thing I liked about the book lies in the way it is written. The author reveals the characters very steadily, and expediently. The author has also used a high range of vocabulary. Since I could not keep up with the vocabulary, sometimes, I had to look up the meanings which increased my knowledge. Additionally, the author has used a mix of long and short sentences, which avoids monotony. The individual book-endings in the series leave you thinking about the plots long after you have finished reading them and at times these endings make you crave for the next book with a haste that is really crazy to deal with.
To conclude, this series was the best I have read so far because of the morals it expounds, and the way it is written. I would definitely recommend this book to all the age groups (especially adolescents) because it is a rare, entertaining, blood-curdling and thought-provoking book.
