Chess is a compelling and interesting game of two players. Not only does it increase your knowledge, creativity and confidence, it also improves your skill of problem solving. Chess was discovered long ago, around 600 AD in India. Played by all ages; children as young as 3 years can play this interesting game and a person can go on playing chess right into one’s old age. It is also known as ‘Chaturanga’ and the ‘Royal game’. I simply love to play this game.
The Pieces
Chess is a board game. It has a square board with 8 rows of 8 squares each, which means 64 squares in all. There are six pieces which are Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen and last but not the least, the King. Each piece has a different value. The Pawn has one point, Knight and Bishop have three points each and the Rook has five points. Moreover, the Queen has nine points and the king has infinite points. All the pieces are set in a specific position when the game begins. Through various movements of the pieces, the game proceeds and is taken to its culmination. Different pieces move in different ways and one must know the techniques to pace them ahead properly. Queen is the most powerful piece in this game and can cause a lot of destruction to the opposing player, if used in the right manner.
Strategies
This game is full of head-scratching war strategies and tactics. One of the most phenomenal strategies is checkmate where the king is caught up in such a way that it can’t move anywhere. Another one is a Skewer- an attack upon two pieces in a line, and is similar to another strategy called Pin. Many such tactics make this game an intriguing combination of creativity and patience. Chess can be played online too! Some of the websites you can play on are : https://www.chess.com/, https://lichess.org/ and https://www.chesskid.com/. For playing on these websites you just need to register or create an account.
Finally, in chess when you find a good move, try to find a better one. Chess is not always about winning and rejoicing, it is about learning from mistakes, as one would do in real life.
