‘The One and only Ivan’ is both a movie and a book which shows how anyone can be an artist. I haven’t read the book yet but the movie is very beautiful. The act is put together with a gorilla who has imposing dreams and he’s called by the name, Ivan.
The Story
Ivan is a gorilla who is obliged to work in a circus. All his life he is told that apes like him are only there to scare people though he believes differently. Ivan has the power of doing something that most people can’t do properly and that is the power of art. The ape makes friends on the way for instance rabbits, chickens, eels and most importantly his very old friend, Stella, who’s an elephant. Unfortunately she passes away during the climax and Ivan is left with the responsibility to look after the other elephant , tiny Ruby. It’s every animal’s dream to be free just like Ruby’s and Ivan tries his very best to achieve that dream. He achieves this by making a prepossessing painting.
The painting conveys a message to the whole world- ‘Animals have the right to be free.’
The Message
The movie is quite thought – provoking. A time where I was jilted was when Ivan’s owner looked after him although Ivan wanted to be free. So I thought that the owner was doing the right thing but later onwards I realised that he wasn’t.
Through this heart warming movie many messages are delivered. It talks about friendship, promises, sympathy, the things we will do for someone in need. It also cautions us never to wear a hairpiece while training an elephant.
The one and only Ivan- a best selling novel and movie is perfect for kids movie nights and people who love animals. This is also perfect for pre teens since you get to learn lots about friendship, family and promises.
