Queen Charlotte is a recent web series which released on Netflix on 4th May 2023. It has already hit the charts and has become quite popular with the release of its maiden season.
A part of the Bridgerton franchise, Queen Charlotte takes us along to the fictional history of the queen of England in the early 19th century.
The Story
We see young princess Charlotte, a black girl from a small kingdom in Germany, experience her world turn upside down after she is taken to London to marry the king of London. Being an independent and strong headed youngster she decides to forfeit the wedding considering the fact that she has no clue of what the king looks or acts like. However, she changes her mind after having an encounter with the king himself while she is on a mission to escape.
The marriage happens but Charlotte is astounded when she finds that she is supposed to live in a castle different from that of the king. Due to the rocky start of her married life she finds herself completely alone. She longs for someone to fill an empty void in her life. This is when Lady Danbury comes by and we see the start of a beautiful friendship.
In a series that traverses through past and present, we are introduced to the harsh pasts of the main characters. We get to appreciate why they are the way they are. From unhappy marriages to uptight families to gender subjugation- each character has their own issues which they constantly battle alone.
We get to see the vile reality of what the scene is like behind those tall walls of the castle. The king who is the so -called protector of the kingdom himself needs protection. There are demons he can’t get rid of from his own life. His battles, his vulnerabilities and his zeal to hold on make him essentially human.
Kudos to the Production Team
This marvelous production provides an engrossing storyline that keeps you at the edge. The sets are absolutely spectacular with gigantic castles and lush green gardens, literally taking us back to 19th century Europe. The dressing team seems to have done a spectacular job with the costumes. From ballroom gowns to the clean hair-dos, they provide us with elaborate snapshots of how the people dressed back then. Each dialogue is delivered with such emotion and grace that it truly enthuses life in the characters. The producers have paid great attention to even the tiniest details of each character. This has helped chisel them out into unique individuals- adding to the colour and chaos.
Romance, Suspense and Humour
This show is a mixture of romance and drama with just the right amount of suspense and humor. From secrets which were better hidden to love dynamics that I personally never thought could exist, this series is a great chronicle of women helping other women achieve their goals and supporting each other through the hard times.
In this timeless saga of love, the king and queen’s intimate battle for love is intriguing yet endearing. It makes the viewers fall in love with them. Apart from that, we also see two men who are completely in love, hiding their true selves behind closed doors due to their own insecurities.
Overall this show has done an exceptional job at keeping the viewers engaged, taking them through a rollercoaster of emotions and blending seamlessly the past and the present. From the characters’ sarcastic jokes to the terrible heartbreaks, the viewers surely will laugh and cry along with them.
I personally had a great time watching the show. It did not take me long to complete it due to the recurring suspense of what will happen next. If you are also looking for a fascinating romantic drama that is short and crisp, you sure would love to watch Queen Charlotte.
