In a world full of trends and expectations, being yourself can be surprisingly difficult. Oscar Wilde’s quote, “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken,” reminds us that individuality is something to value rather than hide. Yet, many people, especially teenagers find themselves trying to fit in by copying others. In this essay, I will explore why people often change themselves to match others, why this can be detrimental, and how embracing individuality can lead to happiness and success.
To begin with, many people change their behaviour because they fear being judged. School can be a place where fitting-in feels extremely important. Someone might pretend to like a certain style of music, fashion or hobby just so they are accepted. Social media also makes this problem worse because it constantly presents images of what we are told is “perfect”. When we compare ourselves to others online, it is easy to believe that who we are is not enough. As a result, people sometimes hide their true interests, personalities and talents just to avoid standing out in a crowd of people who follow popular trends. However, this pressure can make life exhausting because pretending to be someone else takes more effort than simply being ourselves.
Furthermore, trying to copy others can harm us by damaging our self-confidence and lead to a monotonous world. When everyone follows the same trends, life becomes dull and predictable, with no space for uniqueness or creativity. Moreover, when we base our worth on what others think, we rely on outside approval to feel happy. For example, if a student only feels confident when their friends agree with their opinions, then any small disagreement can make them feel insecure. On the other hand, people who accept themselves do not need constant approval from others. They know what they believe in, what they care about and what makes them happy. This self-acceptance leads to a steady confidence that does not depend on other people’s opinions. Not only does it make one feel comfortable in their skin, it also allows for a more distinctive and diverse world.
Most importantly, embracing individuality can lead to real happiness and success. When people allow themselves to be who they truly are, they don’t waste energy worrying about how to modify themselves to fit the crowd. Instead, they can focus on what truly makes them curious, excited and proud. For example, someone who follows their own interests – whether it’s art, science, sport, etc.- is more likely to stay motivated because they enjoy what they are doing. Being unaffected by others, such people can look for proficiency while being happy about their situation. This passion often leads to greater success than simply copying what is popular. At the same time, being true to ourselves helps us feel more content and confident, because our identity is based on our own choices rather than the approval of others. Therefore, embracing who we truly are allows us to experience genuine happiness while also achieving success in our personal goals.
To sum it all up, Oscar Wilde’s message encourages us to recognize our own uniqueness and value it. While the pressure to fit in is real, pretending to be someone else only leads to stress, insecurity and missed opportunities. Being ourselves allows us to build confidence, achieve success and live happier lives. Everyone else is already taken, so the best and most powerful being we can possibly be is indeed ourselves.
