When the teacher outlined the assignment, the class erupted into spontaneous conversation. The teacher explained, “Compose an expressive essay about the description, culture and history of Guanajuato, Mexico, a twenty-minute ride from our city.”
For the students, this prompt meant travelling, conversing and note-taking. They were eager to drop by to a place known for its rich history, vibrant culture, colonial architecture and a meticulous network of underground tunnels. Meanwhile, David calmly perched himself on the table at the back, with a faint smile on his sun-kissed face. To the USA returned AI expert David, this task simply sounded like a ten-minute chat on a glowing screen- he did not really have to go through dust, heat and grime to write about Guanajuato.
As soon as he got home, he opened his laptop, convened his AI chatbot, and promptly transcribed the task. Within a couple of moments, the screen was filled with lines of information. Whether it be dates of founding, architectural landmarks or dynamic customs, David accessed neat paragraphs encompassing all the elements he needed for a solid grade. After a few minutes of rewording, arranging and polishing, he finally leaned back, a satisfied grin on his face, he had an essay that could capture Guanajuato better than any trip.
When the marked essays came back, David felt like a shattered mirror, his self-confidence in countless fragments. While his other AI-generated assignments had been a hit with the teachers, this one in particular did not serve him a good turn. His ‘not so tech-friendly’ classmates bolted out of the classroom with content and the urge to tell their friends and family about their marks, but David stayed, stock-still with a ‘ C’ scribbled on his page- a testament to his failure.
The teacher approached David who sat still with a clenched jaw. Looking at his dismal state, she spoke gently with her voice bouncing off the four walls, “Your essay was quite informative… You should be proud of yourself. I would have given you higher marks, but you lacked personal engagement. From my own experience, I feel like quality work can only be drafted when one experiences a place personally… not through borrowed knowledge.”
David quietly sat, trying to avoid eye contact, and being mindful of his breathing.
The teacher continued, “I know you can do better… I’ll give you one more try, but this time I want you to go there. It’s only 20 minutes from here, a perfect way to spend your weekend… Let the city talk to you.”
Trying to mask his dismay, he smiled and briefly stepped out of the building. Walking home, he made up his mind that crying about it won’t do him any good, but giving it one more try might make a difference.
Hence, the next day David decided to do something different. He closed his laptop, took a bus and decided to visit the municipality of Guanajuato. At first he felt slightly disturbed and restless by the strange expedition- it was like a journey without a compass. But as the bus approached the place, he noticed the phenomenal mirage of flamboyant colours and picturesque architecture.
While walking across the town, he decided to ask a few locals about the culture and history.
He saw an elderly lady, seated on the crimson stool. Her skin was deeply tanned, and her veiny hands caressed through her hair; thin, silver and soft as snow. Her sea-green eyes held a spark of happiness and her raised cheeks told him that she smiled quite a lot. As she spoke in her native language, David could piece together how Guanajuato’s history tends to be defined by its rich silver mines, discovered by the Spanish in the 16th century. This was the focal reason behind the city’s rapid growth and it becoming the leading silver producer by the 18th century. She explained how the city captured art and romance through cultural attractions like the Grand Theater, and romantic spots which drew strong parallels to Romeo and Juliet’s story. Each word from the elderly lady made the city seem even more transcendental and wondrous.
After roaming around the busy and lively city, David underwent an experience that was a flawless blend of cultural events and picturesque views. It was as though the city had etched a place in his heart- a place that would stay fresh for many days. Absorbing the aura and the very breath of Guanajuato, he came back- as though doused in the very immersion of that amazing place.
Once he got home, he switched on the laptop, and began typing down the new experiences and knowledge he had gained. He didn’t need any aid from an AI chatbot, infact his personal engagement was more than enough to draft a flawless essay.
Regardless of the grade he was going to get, he was happy with what he had written, because he had learnt an extremely valuable lesson — AI might be an easy way out of an assignment, but nothing can beat the memorable and worthwhile experience that real life can provide.
