Nevermoor- The Trials of Morrigan Crow is one of the most popular books of all time. With 487 pages you will be finished with this book in 2 days. Morrigan Crow, a 10-year-old girl, is the most avoided girl in her town. But why? you may ask. This is because Morrigan, born on an unlucky day, is blamed for all the misfortunes and accidents that happen around her. But that’s not the worst part. Born on Morningtide, Morrigan is doomed to die on her 11th birthday at midnight on Eventide. As Morrigan comes to accept her fate, a strange man with hair as red as the sun whisks her away just in time before the so-called ‘death’ can come knocking at her door.
The strange man named Jupiter North takes her to the whimsical city of Nevermoor. Nevermoor provides Morrigan with protection but in order to stay, Morrigan and her newly found best friend Hawthorne must pass four difficult and nerve-racking trials. The first is The Book Trial. In order to pass this they must answer 4 difficult questions. The second is The Chase Trial where they must ride on your noble steed to secure a place before they all run out. Next is The Fright Trial. In this trial, they must face their fears and prove their worth in order to pass. The last is The Show Trial. This is where they show the knack or talent that they possess.
But that’s not all! Morrigan has a lot more to face. In the end, when she has secured her place in the ‘Wundrous Society’, she comes face to face with Nevermoor’s biggest enemy- Ezra Squall. After meeting him she finds out that she is a Wundersmith- the most hated beings in Nevermoor. As if it couldn’t get any worse, Ezra insists that Morrigan become his apprentice. Somehow she escapes, only to find herself in a hospital bed when she awakens.
Jupiter along with Hawthorne is sitting beside her. After a few hugs Jupiter hands Morrigan a shiny and brand-new ‘Wundrous Society’ pin. After a few days, she leaves the hospital. She, Jupiter, Hawthorne and Hawthorne’s patron Nancy all go to have lunch and talk about all the scandalous times of rule-breaking when Jupiter and Nancy were in school. This is when Morrigan realizes that her true family were right beside her.
The Trials of Morrigan Crow is one of the few books to have won the Australian Book of The Year Industry Award in 2018. This is a result of many things. The hilarious characters, the heart-warming moments, and the unpredictable storyline are a few of the highlights. I have read more than 60 books in the past 2 years and this multi-award-winning book is definitely in the top 3 for me.
