A life without school is dull, grim and fraught. If we didn’t have these institutions parents would be deranged and siblings would be vexed. Being an older sister, I’m relieved to know that I can be in tranquility for six hours, and I know that my parents are relieved to know that they don’t have to make a snack every 20 minutes for me and my brother. Although my brother and I aren’t too fond of waking up early in the morning, we enjoy making new friends, learning new things and collaborating with different people each day. Hence, we love going to school. I totally agree with the wise person who once stated, “One book, one pen, one child and one teacher can change the world.” School is the most thrilling adventure one can undertake and without a doubt it should be mandatory.
Sleep and Discipline
“Don’t be a slave to your bed; wake up early in the morning and seize the day.” This is exactly what schools make us do!
Schools are a way to discipline children to wake up early get ready for a day of learning. Going to school means sleeping early to wake up early. According to medical specialists, people who lose sleep regularly have a risk of developing high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Lack of sleep can carry several other health risks including kidney disease, diabetes, stroke, etc. Going to school ensures that children receive their full sleep and wake up fresh, ready to gain knowledge. School also promotes punctuality among children which helps them when they graduate from school. Thus, going to school should be mandatory because it teaches children how to be punctual, disciplined and how to have a schedule for the time ahead.
Co-ordination and Focus
Recently my school was ‘home learning’ for a week. This week was an escapade on its own – Logging on to zoom meetings, working continuously on the device, losing track of time and talking to friends online. To be honest this was probably the most erratic week I ever had. This particular event opened my eyes and made me realize how coordinated school is. In school our time is set in such a way that tasks are more focused and easy to achieve. When at home, our mind keeps wandering. We indulge in unnecessary multitasking and wasting away time uselessly.
This statement is as true of teachers as it is of students. In 2020 a survey of more than 25000 teachers across eight countries was conducted. In this survey, the one thing that most teachers agreed on was, that online learning was not as effective as classroom-based teaching. Teachers stated that because of home learning many kids were almost 2 months behind in their learning curve. This clearly shows that school is a foundation where we can receive the support we need to reach our maximum potential. Therefore school must be mandatory so that we can prosper as learners.
Communication
As Lee Lacocca once remarked, “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas can’t take you anywhere.”
Communication is a fundamental skill for people of all ages, and the place where we can evolve this skill is, a school. In a moderate-sized classroom there are about thirty to sixty kids whose company permits us to expand on this skill. When we are at home, we are limited to working with only one or two kids. On the other hand, school familiarizes us many people. It develops in us an understanding of how the real world works. Being surrounded by people with different identities and skills helps us voyage to find our own skill-set. School is an institution that helps carve out our personalities. Hence, school without a doubt should be mandatory as we get lots of opportunities to communicate with others and discover our true potential in a supportive environment.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that education itself cannot enhance one’s personality. It takes an institution like SCHOOL to instill values and provide a congenial atmosphere to carve out our identities. School is a place where I can connect with others and be myself. It is a place where I can allow my mind to wander; a kaleidoscope of colors, feelings and relationships.
School is indeed a beautiful institution that should be mandatory for everyone.
